Sun Damage

Who doesn’t love the warm feeling of the sun on their skin? It is important to remember, however, that the sun gives off Ultraviolet light (UV rays). UV light has proven to be harmful to the skin in a number of ways: it leads to dark spots and breaks down collagen within the skin. Exposure to UV rays has, unfortunately, also proven to increase the chance of skin cancer in most patients. This is why practicing safe sun habits on a daily basis is so important!

Due to the ramifications of UV ray exposure, sun damage can make you look older and less healthy than you really are.

Thankfully, if you see signs of sun damage on your skin, the damage does not have to be permanent! At Skin Care by Alyce, we offer a selection of skin-clearing solutions that will help heal the effects of sun damage and improve your skin’s health for the long-term.

Alyce and her team of skincare specialists have years of experience that help them identify sun damage and suggest the treatment options that will be most effective for the individual patient.

What is Sun Damage?

While the sun is a valuable source of Vitamin D, you also don’t want to overdo it. The number one cause of skin aging isn’t stress, diet, or poor skin care: it’s too much sun exposure!

The outer layers of our skin contain a pigment known as melanin. Melanin protects the skin from the sun’s UV rays. People from fair-skinned genetic backgrounds have less melanin in their skin, which contributes to their fair color. Unfortunately, this also means that people from fairer-skinned backgrounds have a higher chance of damaging their skin with UV rays.

Sunburns are technically first and second degree burns.

You may love the way your tan looks today, but the fact is, a tan is a sign of injury made to the top layer of the skin. Prolonged sun exposure can not only harm the upper layers of the skin, it can also reach down to damage or kill cells deeper in the skin. This results in uneven pigmentation and skin growths in the future. The growth may be benign and only pose a cosmetic concern, or the growth unfortunately may need medical assessment to determine the presence of skin cancer.

While the outdoors is a beautiful place, prolonged sun exposure is one of the fastest ways to speed up your skin’s aging process.

UV rays have shown to break down the collagen and elastin that support our skin. Without the support of the collagen, fine lines and wrinkles will form.

The sun and its impact on your health should absolutely be taken seriously. If you see signs of sun damage on your skin, schedule an appointment with a skin care specialist to address your health and aesthetic concerns.

Signs of Sun Damage

  • Sunburn
  • Freckles
  • Moles
  • Dry Skin
  • Dry, scaly spots
  • Dark spots, such as melasma on the cheeks or brow
  • Looser skin
  • Thinner skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Uneven Skin Tone

Sun damage can appear anywhere on the body. Pigment, blemishes, and thinner skin can develop wherever your skin has had prolonged exposure to the sun. The most noticeable areas for sun damage are the face, hands, chest, and arms.

Risks of Sun Damage

Sun damage negatively impacts both the look and health of your skin.

UV rays break down your supply of collagen. This will accelerate aging and contribute to lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Prolonged sun exposure has proven to make skin dryer and thinner. This increases the chance of skin tearing and can make capillaries visible through the skin. Sun exposure can also lead to hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation that is a frustrating, distracting development, at any age.

Severe sunburns, especially early in life, increase the chances of melanoma. Melanoma is a malignant form of cancer that is highly treatable if caught early. Save yourself peace of mind by practicing safe sun exposure wherever possible!

Can I Treat Sun Damage?

Yes! We offer a range of skin renewing procedures at Skin Care by Alyce to target the damage sun has made to your skin. Every treatment will be customized to you and your skin’s specific issues.

Turn back the clock on sun damage with the help of these rejuvenating procedures:

DermaSweep MD

Treat photo damage and melasma in 30 minutes with DermaSweep MD. Sun damage can dry out the skin and contribute to uneven pigmentation. DermaSweep MD is an advanced microdermabrasion treatment that is proven to hydrate and resurface the skin. A DermaSweep MD procedure offers three major benefits: exfoliation, circulation, and infusion. The treatment gently exfoliates and suctions away damaged, aged skin cells. The skin stimulation has proven to increase blood flow and improve the supply of vital nutrients in the skin. Exfoliation and stimulation are followed by an epi infusion of personalized serums.

Patients with sun damage are good candidates to receive DermaSweep with a gentle chemical peel infusion during the summer time for more pronounced skin renewal.

Skin will be softer and have a more even tone following DermaSweep MD.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a highly customizable resurfacing treatment. Chemical peels are performed using a powerful combination of topical solutions. Your chemical peel will be superficial, medium, or deep, depending on your preferred outcome and recovery timeline. The deeper the peel, the longer the downtime: but also, the more dramatic the result!

Your chemical peel will likely be a careful combination of acids and retinols. Kojic, mandelic, and hydroquinone can also be applied to address unwanted pigmentation. Chemical peels have shown to help get rid of pre-cancerous growths and activate fibroblasts to stimulate collagen and elastin production. The skin will peel away over the days following your chemical peel. Your dry, coarse, uneven skin will vanish, revealing the smooth, healthier-looking skin beneath.

You will receive personalized instructions to help you experience your best recovery from your chemical peel.

Oxygen Treatment

An Oxygen treatment will help breathe life back into your sun-damaged skin! The treatment increases oxygen flow to the skin and helps to lighten dark, dry skin. An oxygen treatment reduces redness, stimulates collagen production, and improves the healthy function of the skin. An oxygen treatment is safe for all skin types and can be performed once a week.

Skin Classic

The Skin Classic is an electrodessication skin resurfacing treatment that is highly effective for targeting and erasing growths and blemishes from the skin. Skin Classic applies high-frequency radio energy to essentially “zap” away damaged or unwanted skin cells.

Skin Classic is an excellent solution to brown spots, and broken capillaries.

Your skin will shed the unwanted or concerning skin cells over the weeks following your treatment to reveal smoother, healthier skin!

IPL

IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment. IPL applies targeted broadband light to virtually erase vascular and pigmented lesions from the skin. The procedure is an excellent way to address specific issues, as well as improve overall skin quality. If you are experiencing rosacea, hyperpigmentation, firmness, or simply have duller, aged-looking skin due to sun damage, IPL will restore a more youthful look and feel to the skin.

Microneedling

If your skin could use a refresh, microneedling is a highly recommended solution! Microneedling will jumpstart your collagen production and promote turnover of newer, healthier skin. Over the weeks following microneedling, skin becomes fuller, clearer, and smoother.

Patients whose skin could use a dramatic jumpstart will see regeneration on a cellular level with microneedling with PRP.

How to Protect Your Skin

Protect the smooth, soft texture of your skin by practicing safe sun exposure on a daily basis. If you know you will be out in the sun, wear a hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves. Wear at least 30 SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even if you will be indoors. Practice safe sun habits and avoid sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, when the rays are at their strongest. Avoid tanning beds and if you are in the sun for a prolonged period of time, make sure you reapply your sunscreen!

Consultation

If you are worried about the effect the sun has had on your body, schedule an informative consultation at Skin Care by Alyce.
