PRP [FAQ]

What is PRP used for?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is taking the cosmetic world by storm!

You may have heard about Kim Kardashian’s facial treatment using her own plasma, or about PRP’s powerful anti-aging abilities. If you are curious about the benefits and applications of PRP, below are some of our patient’s frequently asked questions:

What is PRP therapy used for?

PRP therapy has been used in professional athletics for years. PRP has helped athletes like Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant heal more quickly from their injuries. These men give PRP major credit for helping them get back to a high level of physical performance. PRP has been especially useful for treating knees, shoulder, elbow, and other joint-related injuries.

Now, more people than ever are realizing the impressive benefits that PRP offers to the skincare world!  PRP optimizes the results of microneedling by stimulating a greater amount of collagen production. PRP revives healthy skin function and promotes faster healing to reduce scars, fill in fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin tone.

What are the benefits of PRP?

PRP therapy has a number of cosmetic and anti-aging benefits. These benefits include:

Heals scarring and hyperpigmentation
Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
All-natural treatment (the PRP is your own!)
Greater collagen development
Faster recovery from microneedling
Comfortable treatment

What is microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP is the recommended method of administering PRP to the skin. Microneedling is performed using an electric medical-grade pen. The pen houses 14 fine needles which are disposed of and replaced fresh after each use. The microneedles create fine microchannels. These channels reach safely and effectively to the deep dermal layers. Medical microneedling is highly recommended, due to the fact that these lab-tested needles are guaranteed to create clean channels in the skin. We here at Skin Care by Alyce use the only FDA-approved microneedling pen on the market.

At-home or off-brand microneedling devices do not pierce the skin as cleanly and often scratch or tear the tissue. Microneedling with skincare experts like Alyce or her staff will create controlled microchannels that stimulate targeted, healthy healing and encourage turnover of newer, more volumized skin.

Once microneedling has been performed, the PRP mixture will be applied to your skin. The PRP will follow the microchannels and soak into the deep dermis.  The PRP will get to work right away to promote cell growth and speed up the rate and quality of your renewal. Microneedling by itself makes a beautiful improvement in the look and health of the skin; PRP will optimize your microneedling results to achieve a more dramatic improvement in skin volume and clarity.  Here at Skin Care by Alyce, we go a step further with our PRP. Our PRP is converted to PRP using a controlled process, creating a scaffold that serves to protect and preserve platelets, which holds the platelets in the treated area up to 7 days longer to deliver a much more effective result.

How does PRP improve my skin?

PRP application with microneedling will stimulate the healthy function of your skin. The microchannels create “mini wounds” in the skin, which will promote the renewal of damaged, scarred skin. The growth factors in the platelet proteins will engage with the deep dermis on a cellular level. This promotes better renewal and produces a greater amount of collagen growth than microneedling alone. The growth factors will also improve the speed of cell turnover. Skin becomes much fuller, filling in fine lines and wrinkles.

Can PRP treat scars?

The PRP will facilitate new skin cell production that will slowly replace damaged, scarred skin. Skin will become smoother and more even-toned. Subsequent PRP applications will continue to improve the appearance of acne scars and discolorations until the skin finally is smooth and clear. Most patients see their best results within three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart.

Patients can receive a topical anesthetic to keep them comfortable during their treatment.

How many PRP treatments are needed?

Patients see their best skin after three PRP applications. We recommend spacing each session at least four to six weeks apart. To keep skin glowing and looking its best, we recommend repeating one PRP application every six months.

How long do the results of PRP last?

PRP application makes long-lasting improvements in the tone and clarity of the skin. Each treatment will further diminish blemishes and discolorations. In many cases, PRP applications get rid of scars and unwanted pigment for good!

Healthy skin volume and a youthful glow following PRP application lasts on average four to six months. Future treatment can keep your skin looking as young and healthy as possible for the long-term!

How long does PRP take to work?

The rate at which PRP takes effect will depend on your unique body chemistry. Once the PRP is applied to the skin, it will immediately begin engaging with the deep dermis. Your recovery will be shorter than the average recovery following microneedling thanks to the healing powers of PRP. The PRP will stimulate collagen production over the weeks after the treatment. The newer, fuller skin will take time to reach the surface. Within a few weeks, you will see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

You will have a healthier glow!

What should I do before PRP treatment?

In order to prepare for a successful PRP treatment, discontinue use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen a week before your procedure. Arthritis medication should also be discontinued at least one week before receiving PRP. Patients should stop using corticosteroid medications for two to three weeks prior to treatment with PRP. Please check with your doctor before stopping any medication.

What are the Side Effects of PRP?

This is a very low-risk procedure! PRP is created using your own blood plasma. There are no side effects of PRP. The main risk with PRP application is an infection at the injection site. Thankfully, Alyce is a registered nurse who maintains high medical skincare standards. The microchannels created during PRP application are very fine and will close within an hour. Infections most likely will not occur.

Following PRP application for skin rejuvenation, patients will experience the usual side effects from a microneedling treatment. Bruising, swelling, and redness can occur. However, the PRP will significantly diminish the longevity of these post-procedure conditions. The conditions will abate and your skin will be calmer and clearer within one to two days.

Is PRP right for me?

Anyone can benefit from the healing power of PRP! PRP is an excellent option for patients who have:

Fine lines and wrinkles
Volume loss
Hyperpigmentation
Sun damage
Dull, dry, or tired-looking skin
Acne scars
Skin laxity
Large pores

Wait to receive PRP if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have used Accutane, you will need to wait until it has been at least three months since the conclusion of your treatment. Do not receive PRP application while you have open wounds, abrasions, herpes, or any active skin condition. Patients with a history of keloids or poor wound healing should not receive microneedling.

Does treatment with PRP hurt?

PRP for skin restoration is a comfortable procedure! Patients can receive a topical anesthetic to keep them 100% pain-free during their minimally-invasive treatment.

Is PRP safe?

PRP is completely safe! Platelet-rich-plasma is a product of your own body. PRP is administered to the body following microneedling or to the scalp via careful injection. These procedures are minimally-invasive and low-risk. There are no negative effects on your body from PRP.

How much does treatment with PRP cost?

The price of PRP application for skin rejuvenation will vary on a case-by-case basis. The price of your PRP treatment will depend on the size of the area you would like to treat and how many treatments you anticipate receiving.

Alyce will meet privately with you to assess your skin and make a recommendation of the treatment plan that will best achieve your goals. Together, you will create a custom PRP treatment plan. Once you have finalized the details of your treatment, you will receive an appropriate pricing breakdown.
