PDO Smooth and Barbed Threads

Smooth Threads

A smooth thread procedure is a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation treatment that effectively smooths wrinkled skin of the face. As we age, a number of changes are reflected in our skin, especially on our faces. Years of facial expressions can start to leave permanent marks in the form of laughter lines around the sides of the mouth, crow’s feet at the corner of each eye, and sleep lines or sun damage on the cheeks. Threse threads are not barbed, and dissolve quickly to build collagen, and promote smooth skin. A minimum of thre treatments are recommended.

Most thread procedures are made possible with the use of polydioxanone (commonly referred to as PDO). PDO threads are made of dissolvable medical grade strands of proteins, each thinner than a single hair. They successfully smooth lax, wrinkled skin to create a more youthful facial contour. (1) This method may be desired by patients looking for a more natural-looking alternative to facial rejuvenation surgery.  They can be effectively employed to improve plumping in the lips and solve wrinkling around the eyes.

Barbed Threads

There is certainly no shortage of rejuvenating anti-aging treatments available today, but thread lifting offers many advantages. Minimally invasive nonsurgical thread (MINT) is used. Those familiar with PDO threading will know that there are two main types of PDO thread available, smooth and barbed. Like barbed threads, these also stimulate the body’s natural collagen production and dissolve into the body in the weeks after your procedure. Smooth threads soften and plump the skin, effectively eliminating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Barbed threads latch into the tissue under the skin to tighten and rejuvenate, and are particularly effective in the jawline and eyebrows to reshape and lift sagging features. Slowly disintegrating into the body, barbed threads also stimulate the body’s ability to produce collagen for a more youthful facial appearance, and can last for up to 2 years.

A Great Alternative to Invasive Surgery

Crow’s feet are one of the first signs of aging to show on the face. Periorbital wrinkles occur frequently because the periorbital skin is thin and the area has abundant expression muscles.(2) PDO thread procedures are a drastically simpler and safer option than surgical facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelifts. There is virtually no pain or bleeding and the chances of scarring are very low.(3) Of most concern in terms of safety, studies have confirmed that undergoing a facelift procedure exposes patients to risks which include anesthesia complications, excessive bleeding, deep vein thrombosis, and permanent facial nerve damage.(4)

Threads are much safer, and have even been labelled “the new Botox” for their natural-looking results and accessible price point. The treatment employs the use of fine or barbed threads that lift the skin and keep it in place. Barbed threads are reabsorbed by the body 4-6 months after the procedure in a process known as hydrolysis, which triggers the body to produce more collagen in the targeted area. (1) Smooth threads dissolve in 4-6 weeks.

Smooth Threads for Crow’s Feet Procedure

Prior to your smooth thread treatment, registered nurse Alyce Versagli will evaluate the areas for treatment in a personal consultation. The number of threads used will depend on the extent of your treatment and the aesthetic characteristics of the wrinkles around your eyes. On the day of your treatment, she will prepare your periorbital skin by cleansing it thoroughly and precisely placing the MINT PDO smooth threads into the area. Unlike barbed threads, there is no skin gathering involved. Each fine, hairlike thread takes seconds to insert and feels like a small pinch. She will follow a specified pattern of thread placement to optimize skin rejuvenation and smoothing.

Results & Recovery

The biocompatible nature of smooth threads means that in just a few weeks, they will seamlessly dissolve into the body and provide you with smoother, more youthful-looking skin texture. In the initial hours and days after your smooth thread treatment, you may experience some stinging and bruising in the area of treatment, but this will subside over a short period of time. The results of your smooth thread treatment will be fully apparent in the weeks after your procedure. 3-4 treatments scheduled 4-6 weeks apart are recommended.

FAQ

What do smooth threads do?

Smooth threads are administered by a licensed healthcare professional and incorporate delicate biocompatible threads under the skin’s surface to rejuvenate tissues. PDO thread treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the appearance of sagging and wrinkling in the skin for a smoother skin aesthetic. Thread lifts can be excellent alternatives to more drastic surgical facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelifts.

What areas of my face can I get smooth threads for?

Smooth threads are most effective in areas of the face that require smoothing and tightening which include around the eyes, around the lips, under the chin, and in the hollows of the cheeks.

Am I a good candidate for smooth threads?

Everybody’s skin ages in a slightly different way, and everybody’s skin is unique in tone and texture. If you experience crepey skin, crow’s feet and fine lines around the lips and mouth, you may benefit from smooth threads as a facial revitalization method. Speak to a medical professional to see if smooth threading is suitable for your individual needs.

When will I be able to see the results of my smooth threads treatment?

It may take a few weeks to see the lasting benefits of smooth threads as the body responds to treatment. As the threads dissolve, the body will produce collagen and other tissue bonding compounds. Depending on the areas targeted for treatment, some patients will require more than one session of smooth threads for more dramatic results. You should see optimal results between 3-4 months after your treatment.
