How Do I Get Rid of Brown Spots?

How Do I Get Rid of Brown Spots?

Hyperpigmentation is the technical term for the appearance of dark splotches on the skin. There are many reasons why people develop discolorations, the most common of which is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and injury or hormonal changes.[1]

For example, pregnant women and women who take birth control may develop melasma.[2] Melasma is a smattering of brownish-gray blotches that often appear on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and bridge of the nose. When hormones are stimulated (as a result of pregnancy or certain medications), they activate the melanocytes under the skin. Melanocytes are responsible for the skin’s pigmentation.

Before we can treat melasma or any other form of hyperpigmentation, we want to get to the root causes of the issue. Skin Care by Alyce has mastered several remedies for dark spots on the face and body, but we are careful to apply the appropriate treatment for each individual case. The only way to determine which course of action is best for you is to schedule a personal consultation

Intense Pulsed Light for Hyperpigmentation

When excessive exposure to sunlight ages the skin, the process is called photoaging. To counteract photoaging, Skin Care by Alyce uses intense pulsed light, or IPL. The wavelengths in the light target aberrations and heat them. As damaged cells get heated, the body gets rid of them naturally. The selective nature of IPL light only affects the unwanted discolorations on the skin, leaving the surrounding areas unharmed and radiant.

IPL is more effective than traditional laser treatments because it harnesses the power of more than one wavelength at a time.

Hence, IPL can address a range of concerns simultaneously and treat a large area of skin in one easy session. The ravishing results: a more even skin tone free of unsightly brown spots and a smoothing of fine lines.

Chemical Peels

Age spots can also be lightened with a safe and effective chemical peel. The exact solution of your peel will be formulated according to your complexion and aesthetic goals. To address dark blotches, a hydroquinone-based peel may be the optimal choice. If aging skin is more of a concern, then a blend of acids and retinol may be the ideal solution.

Chemical peels can brighten your skin by stripping away discolorations.

You will also benefit from a smoother texture. Peels can also help alleviate acne troubles. To ask which chemical peel is right for you, call (610) 685-2575 and speak to one of our knowledgeable staff members.

Skin Brightening Mask

Skin Care by Alyce takes a holistic approach to your health and cosmetic needs. You may desire a concentrated IPL session, a deep peel, or simply a facial treatment. Our custom brightening mask is made of a polysaccharide seaweed gel that hydrates as it penetrates. Once the mask is removed, you will witness its clarifying effects in action. Your complexion will exude a lighter, brighter glow than before. Your mirror image will beam happily back at you!

Preparation for Skin Treatment

Your skin is as unique as your personality. For that reason, your skin brightening procedure will be tailored to you specifically. During your individualized consultation, you will be given detailed instructions to prepare you for your next skincare session. If you are receiving a chemical peel, for example, you should follow a different protocol than if you are administered topical solutions. The following is a sample of how you might be advised to prepare for an intense pulsed light (IPL) session, but all patients vary.

Preparing for IPL

  • Please stop tanning (either with natural sunlight or beds and sprays) at least six weeks before your treatment
  • Do not exfoliate for at least a week prior to your procedure
  • Avoid irritants like harsh chemicals and perfumes for the week leading up to your treatment
  • Please don’t wear makeup on the day of your IPL session

From the moment you arrive for your treatment, our attentive staff will make you feel at home. Most skin brightening procedures only take 20-30 minutes, but the exact duration hinges on the extent of the discoloration and the type of treatment you are receiving. We will discuss your concerns about discomfort well before any procedure begins. Please call (610) 685-2575 to schedule an appointment at our beautiful Wyomissing office.

Recovery and Results

Depending on the nature of your dark spots and the specific treatment you receive, the discoloration may get more pronounced in the 3-6 days following your enhancement session. This is normal and should fade approximately one week after treatment. Please do not try to “speed up” the process by scrubbing or scraping your skin. Amazing skin is worth the wait!

Intense pulsed light has a great success record, with over 78% enjoying a clinical clearance rate of over 50%.[3] Our patients’ reviews glow as brightly as your skin will!

Cost of Skin Brightening in Pennsylvania

Your skin is priceless. It demands maintenance and enhancement suited precisely to your complexion. That is why the price of each skin brightening procedure varies. Cost should never get in the way of quality healthcare. The helpful team at Skin Care by Alyce can work with you to determine the best treatment strategy at the right price.

We occasionally run specials on certain procedures to help our Wyomissing neighbors access the treatments they need at discounted rates. Please check back every once in a while to see how we can achieve your aesthetic dreams without the nightmare of exorbitant medical bills.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It is a comprehensive skin care procedure that bathes dark spots with an array of wavelengths and heats them up while preserving the surrounding tissue. The body then disposes of the heated cells, leaving behind a brighter and more even tone.

Does light treatment hurt?

Some patients experience minor discomfort during an IPL session, but Skin Care by Alyce works to minimize swelling and redness. A cooling crystal covers the tip that emits the light source. To discuss your concerns about the stinging sensation that may accompany intense pulsed light treatment, please contact us
