A PDO lift is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a biocompatible thread underneath the surface of the skin to lift sagging facial skin. Thread lifts are excellent alternatives to involved surgical facelifts, which require extensive incisions, sutures, and recovery time. This procedure uses a specially designed thread to lift and hold the skin taut and create a more youthful appearance. Patients love thread lifts because they are a fast way to get real results. In fact, this procedure is so quick that it’s nicknamed the “lunchtime lift.”
PDO stands for polydioxanone, which is a dissolvable sugar-based material that is used as a thread to suture incisions during surgery. This smooth thread reacts with water in the skin to slowly dissolve, which eliminates the need for stitches to be removed after an incision has healed. It also makes thread lifts a temporary and subtle way to restore youthful volume to the skin.
Thread lifts are restorative and preventative. They initiate the body’s natural healing process, which causes it to create firming collagen at the site of the thread, and improve skin’s firmness long term. “Hanging by a thread” never looked so good!
If you want to give your face a little pick-me-up, but don’t want to commit to an invasive procedure, a thread lift might be just the thing.

About PDO Smooth Thread Lifts
“A stitch in time saves nine,” and this is certainly the case when it comes to thread lifts.
Thread lifts are excellent solutions to moderately sagging jowls and can elevate the apples of your cheeks for more dynamic dimensions in your face. But when it comes to a thread lift, it’s what’s inside that counts!
As we age, our body produces less and less collagen. Collagen is the structural support of our skin and what keeps it firm and tight. By the time we reach our 70’s, our skin is up to 80% thinner than it was in our youth, which is what leads to sagging and wrinkles.
When we experience an injury, our body initiates the healing process on a cellular level. Growth factors initiate new cell growth and the production of collagen. And, collagen is key! Having a strong “scaffolding” of collagen is what keeps our skin firm. When the thread is inserted into the problem area, the body reacts as if an injury had occurred. So, in addition to the lifting action that the thread performs, the body is also “tricked” into producing collagen to plump the area and lift it. (1)
A thread lift offers many benefits when compared to other more invasive surgical procedures.
- Fast procedure
- Temporary results
- Continual improvement of wrinkles
- Prevents formation and deepening of wrinkles
- Readily absorbed by the body and safely eliminated
- Subtle lift
- Instant results
- Can be tailored to address specific areas of the face
Because thread lifts are less dramatic and the thread is naturally reabsorbed by the body in about 6 months, they are a great option for those who are seeking a natural-looking, minimally invasive lift.
Candidates for a thread lift are hoping to stop the clock and want to improve the firmness of their facial skin. Thread lifts are ideal for those who aren’t ready for a major surgical procedure and just want to “test-drive” a new more youthful look. Thread lifts are most effective for those with minor sagging and less severe wrinkles and lines. If you don’t have time for a long, invasive procedure and months of recovery, you may be an excellent candidate for a thread lift.

Thread lifting using PDO threads is a straightforward procedure, and you’ll be enjoying your newly lifted face in less than an hour. Before the threads are inserted, your face will be cleansed and you’ll receive injections of a local anesthetic to ensure that your procedure is as comfortable as possible. Next, Alyce will make a small incision and insert a slim cannula, or hollow tube, underneath the skin. The thread passes through this tube, and when the tube is withdrawn, the thread remains in the skin. Alyce will make strategic sutures to anchor the thread in place, and lift the tissue, suspending it in a lifted position. The process will be repeated on the other side of the face to ensure even and symmetrical results. Because this procedure is so quick and causes minimal discomfort, no general anesthesia is required. The entire thread lift procedure is usually less than 30 minutes!
The PDO material that these threads are made from is biocompatible, so there’s no risk of an allergic reaction or other side effects. You may experience some mild swelling and bruising. This typically only lasts for a week or two, and because the entry point is so small, there’s no noticeable scarring. You’ll enjoy your new appearance until the thread gradually dissolves, but because of the body’s natural healing process, and continued production of extra collagen, you’ll notice significant improvement in the months to come. (2) You won’t be able to see or feel the threads under your skin, but you may feel a little “tighter.” You may experience a little resistance when moving your facial muscles at first but this subsides after the first three weeks.
You’ll be able to enjoy your results as soon as your procedure is finished. Imagine a firmer visage, defined jawline and lifted cheeks. Thread lifts can make it possible! Dermal fillers may be used with PDO threads to replace lost volume. The overall condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next year thanks to kickstarted collagen production. (1)
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
A thread lift can boost the contours of your face, but it won’t affect the texture or improve the radiance of your skin. So, while the thread is at work behind the scenes, why not do something to indulge the surface of your skin? Alyce offers skin resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels, intense pulsed light and other aesthetic laser procedures that can remove the spots and blemishes that can make you look older than you feel.
Skin Classic Skin Resurfacing can improve the appearance of sun spots, skin tags, age spots, milia, keratoses, and other issues. This skin resurfacing device uses high-frequency electronic currents. When applied to the skin, it can eliminate unwanted growths and irregular pigmentation. The Skin Classic device allows Alyce to target specific concerns and can remove small growths via electrodesiccation. The high-frequency energy kills the problem skin cells. The treated area then scabs and is shed, revealing new, blemish-free, healthy skin underneath. Because it also kills bacteria, it’s an excellent solution for those who struggle with acne.

A dissolvable thread is placed underneath the skin and sutured into place in order to lift and tighten the loose skin of the face. Within 6 months, the thread will have reacted with the water in the skin and completely dissolved. Because this procedure also stimulates collagen production in the treated area, patients experience improved skin quality with fewer wrinkles and more volume. Patients can see these lingering results for up to a year.
A facelift with PDO thread is a minimally invasive procedure and only requires local anesthesia. Most thread lift procedures take under 30 minutes.
Lifting threads lift skin that is sagging at the face, while smooth threads are a more superficial treatment mean to address fine lines. Smooth threads are also used to create a crisp border on the upper lip.
